Damian Lillard drops 61 to lead Portland past Dallas, keep playoff hopes alive

Damian Lillard wasn’t going to lose on Tuesday night.

He more than made sure of that.

Lillard put up a career-tying 61 points — marking yet another 50-point game this season — to lead the Portland Trail Blazers past the Dallas Mavericks 134-131 at Walt Disney World, keeping their postseason hopes alive in the process.

“It ain’t nothing I want more,” Lillard told Yahoo Sports’ Chris Haynes after the game. “I told you when I first came here, I ain’t come here to waste my time. They gave us a chance to get in like we asked for, and that’s what we’re here to do … our work ain’t done yet, but we’re fighting for it.”

Jazz’s Joe Ingles in a bind after NBA return date announcement

Both players and fans are ecstatic about the resumption of the 2019-20 NBA season. While Utah Jazz swingman Joe Ingles shares similar sentiments, he’s in a bind as to how to take care of his children and pregnant wife.

As per iSports NBA livedata, the NBA will hold closed-door games with a limited crew in Disney World in Orlando. As a bubble location, it will also house players and their families. It’s good news for the players. But this may not be the case for Joe Ingles, whose pregnant wife Renae and son Jacob, who has autism, are more susceptible to the coronavirus.

(iSports NBA data API covers a wide range of games and leagues with livescore, standings, events, line-ups, pre-match odds, statistics)

“The flip side for me, which breaks your heart, is ‘what you do with your family?'” Ingles told Utah’s The Zone Sport Network on Thursday, as reported.

See the source image

According to basketball data provider iSports API, the Jazz, who sport a 41-23 record, is one of the 22 teams set to return to action. Ingles said that his wife and son may fly back to Australia. Once the season is over, Ingles intends to rejoin them. However, Australia’s strict quarantine rules are a major concern.

“You have to quarantine for two weeks in a hotel if you fly back to Australia and obviously with a pregnant wife and two near four-year-olds, that’s pretty hard to do,” he said.

“It’s hard enough in a house to quarantine, never mind a hotel.”

The NBA said that it well exercise extreme medical precautions once the season resumes. Hopefully, Ingles’ concerns, as well as other players who are in a similar situation will be prioritized.

Trae Young wishes Vince Carter farewell with emotional message

Atlanta Hawks star Trae Young bid an emotional farewell to longtime veteran Vince Carter, as it appears he’s played his last NBA game.

Atlanta Hawks star Trae Young bid an emotional farewell to longtime veteran Vince Carter, as it appears he’s played his last NBA game.

The league plans to send a proposal to the Board of Governors on Thursday, prompting a restart of the 2019-20 season with the best 22 teams. The Hawks fall well-short of qualification as the fourth-worst team in the league, as per iSports basketball API.

(iSports NBA data API covers a wide range of games and leagues with livescore, standings, events, line-ups, pre-match odds, statistics)

Carter had announced this would be his last NBA season, but he wouldn’t have guessed it would come so suddenly as the season came to a halt on March 11 after the first reported case of the novel coronavirus.

See the source image

Vinsanity did play that very day, suiting up for 13 minutes in a 136-131 overtime loss to the New York Knicks, contributing five points, a rebound, and a 3-pointer, according to NBA livedata provider iSports API.

Shortly after news of the 22-team plan to resume the season, Young reached out toCarter, noting it’s a wrap for the Hawks’ season:

Carter spent the bulk of his last two seasons with the Hawks, serving as a mentor to some of the young players in the roster. Young was a star in the making, but one that needed the guidance of a savvy Carter, who played 22 seasons in the league, surpassing Dirk Nowitzki’s all-time mark.

Half -Man, Half-Amazing became the first NBA player to play across four decades after being drafted by the Golden State Warriors in 1998 and consequently traded to the Toronto Raptors, where he spent his first seven seasons.

A likely nod for the Hall of Fame, Carter put up career averages of 16.7 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 3.1 assists, recorded by iSports NBA API — showing unmatchable longevity throughout his illustrious career in the league.

Wizards owner delivers John Wall warning to the rest of the NBA

Despite missing a majority of the 2018-19 NBA season and subsequently the entire 2019-20 campaign, John Wall is not to be trifled with, according to Washington Wizards owner Ted Leonsis.

In an interview with Chase Hughes of NBC Sports Washington, Leonsis revealed that he is excited about the return of Wall, especially since he expects the Wizards guard to be in a “different place” physically after his past surgeries.

(iSports basketball data API covers a wide range of games and leagues with livescore, standings, events, line-ups, pre-match odds, statistics)

“I’m very much looking forward to John Wall’s return because I think physically he will be in a much different place. He has spoken about the pain that he had been in with his bone spurs. John once showed me a bone spur, one of the bone spurs that they took out of his heel. I will be sincere with you, I had never seen something like that. I couldn’t imagine what that felt like,” the Wizards boss explained.

See the source image

“There are times where John has been isolated on social media where ‘look, he’s not playing defense, he’s not getting back.’ And then you would talk to John and he would say ‘I feel like there are razor blades in my feet when I’m running backwards. It’s gotten to the point where I can’t do it, I’m hurting the team now.'”

John Wall, a five-time All-Star with the Wizards during his nine-plus-year tenure in D.C., first suffered a season-ending heel injury which required surgery in Jan. 2019, according to iSports basketball API. Wall later hurt himself at home, sustaining an Achilles tendon rupture in early Feb. 2019, keeping him away from the game for now 17 months and counting.

Wall’s absence from the Wizards’ backcourt has prevented the team from breaking through in the postseason picture in the Eastern Conference. Before the season was suspended due to COVID-19, the team was ninth with a 24-20 record, as per basketball livedata provider iSports API.

If the NBA’s 22-team format for the resumption of the 2019-20 season pushes through, the Wizards will have a chance to join the competition. However, they will have to rely on Bradley Beal alone to salvage their playoff hopes.

Luka Doncic’s injured hand fully healed thanks to long hiatus

Perhaps the good thing about the long hiatus brought about by the coronavirus pandemic is that Luka Doncic’s injured hand has fully healed according to Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban.

To recall, Luka Doncic injured his left thumb in the Mavs’ 109-103 victory against the San Antonio Spurs in late February, as per iSports basketball data provider. He left in the first quarter of the game to have it taped up then came back right away. The Slovenian revealed that his thumb got slapped twice but the referees thought that the defenders hit all ball.

Though he finished their game against the Spurs, the injury bothered Doncic in the next games. After their 126-118 loss to the Miami Heat, Doncic admitted how difficult it was to play with an injured thumb, according to iSports basketball API.

The Mavs wisely let Doncic sit out several games for the thumb to heal. But fast forward to March 11, the NBA had to suspend the 2019-20 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Mavs were one of the last teams to play.

For the past few weeks, the NBA has been in constant discussion on the possible resumption of the season. Disney World in Orlando is the highly-favored bubble location which will hold closed-door games as well as house players and their family.

Jason Terry leaves Mavs G-League team for Arizona Wildcats

19-year NBA veteran and former Wildcat Jason Terry has accepted assistant coaching job at Arizona. Terry departs Mavs, where he's been assistant GM of Texas Legends. Announcement expected Thursday.

One-time NBA champ and former Sixth Man of the Year winner Jason Terry is taking the next step in his post-playing career. NBA insider Shams Charania reports that Terry has accepted a role as an assistant coach in his alma matter of Arizona.

According to iSports NBA API, Jason Terry is parting ways with the Dallas Mavericks — the team he played for eight seasons during his time in the league — after being the assistant general manager of the Mavs’ G League affiliate, the Texas Legends, since September of 2019.

(iSports basketball data API covers a wide range of games and leagues with livescore, standings, events, line-ups, pre-match odds, statistics)

It was a short-lived stint for Terry as a league executive, and it appears that at this point, he considers coaching to be a better fit for him as opposed to taking the front office route.

See the source image

As per basketball data provider iSports API, Terry spent four years with Arizona as a player between 1995 and 1999. In his sophomore year, he helped the Wildcats to a historic NCAA title. In his final playing year for the squad, the 6-foot-2 guard averaged 21.9 points, 3.3 rebounds, 5.5 assists, and 2.8 steals, while also knocking down 2.6 triples per game on a 39.8-percent clip. This earned him the Pac-10 Player of the Year award for that season, as well as an inclusion to the All-Pac-12 squad.

He is now making a triumphant return to his old stomping ground. Terry seems to be determined to pursue a career in coaching, and is willing to earn his stripes, so to speak, as he accepts a role as an assistant under tenured head coach Sean Miller, who has been at the helm since 2009.

Giannis Antetokounmpo speaks out on ‘Greek Freak’ moniker

Milwaukee Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo is unlike most NBA superstars before him.

The reigning MVP possesses incredible size, length, athleticism and skill — a blend which has helped him lead the Bucks to new heights in the last two seasons, according to iSports NBA API. This blend also birthed a new nickname, one that paired his nationality with his unique physical attributes: the “Greek Freak.”

(iSports basketball data API covers a wide range of games and leagues with livescore, standings, events, line-ups, pre-match odds, statistics)

Even though the nickname sort of speaks for itself, its origin is unknown. Not even Antetokounmpo knows who first came up with the nickname, though he said he loves the moniker.

“First of all, the nickname is really good. I like it,” the Bucks superstar said during an appearance on Capture Sports Marketing’s Athletes Doing Good Radiothon last Thursday.

See the source image

“I don’t remember the first time I heard about it — it was probably my rookie year — but I really don’t know who came up with it,” he said. “I just went on the court one day and I had like a crazy dunk or a crazy block and after that everyone started calling me the Greek Freak. So it stuck by me, I love it and it’s a cool nickname.”

“Freak” might not have the most positive connotation, but it is fitting for Giannis Antetokounmpo.

Antetokounmpo routinely makes highlight-reel plays on the hardwood, using his long strides and enormous reach to get to the rim and score from just about anywhere.

According to iSports basketball API, the 25-year-old was likely on his way to a second consecutive MVP in 2019-20 prior to the suspension of play due to the coronavirus crisis.

On the season, Giannis was averaging 29.6 points, 13.7 rebounds and 5.8 assists for the Bucks while also showing an increasing level of comfort in shooting from the perimeter, as per basketball data provider iSports API.

Antetokounmpo’s steady evolution continues to make him one of the most remarkable superstars in the NBA, and the nickname has become synonymous with his persona.

"I am examining my options. I have a few choices from the States, but I have decided to play in Europe," he told the website. "I want to become a pro as soon as possible. I was born and raised in Europe, I know European basketball, and the best thing for me would be to sign a contract with a European club. I will have to train and compete against grown men, I will experience strong competition and pressure, and I will evolve on every level."

According to iSports basketball API, Alex Antetokounmpo averaged 20 points and 7 rebounds per game as a senior at Dominican High School this season. He moved to the Milwaukee area from Greece in 2013, when Giannis was a rookie with the Milwaukee Bucks.

Antetokounmpo isn't ranked in the 2020 ESPN 100. He was twice a first-team all-state selection and averaged 20 points and 7 rebounds per game during his senior season.

He will be eligible for the NBA draft beginning in 2021. He told EuroHoops.net that playing in Europe "will really help me in my plan to prepare myself in the best possible way. So when I feel ready to take the next step, I will be totally prepared for the NBA."

As per baskertball data provider iSports API, if he makes it to the NBA, he would become the fourth Antetokounmpo brother to do so. Giannis and Thanasis both play for the Bucks, while Kostasplays for the Los Angeles Lakers.

Ramsey has not hired an agent and said in his statement on Twitter that he will maintain his college eligibility.Ramsey took a circuitous route to Texas Tech, starting his high school career at Duncanville in Dallas before transferring to IMG Academy in Florida, then transferring again to Oak Hill Academy in Virginia before finishing up back at Duncanville.

He was managed to exceed those lofty expectations with a strong freshman season that entered him into the one-and-done conversation. The appeal around Ramsey is readily apparent on first glance, as he stands 6-foot-4, as per iSports basketball API, with a strong frame, solid athletic ability and terrific scoring instincts. He's a gifted isolation scorer who can bully weaker guards and shows terrific shot-making prowess from all over the floor thanks to his unlimited confidence and excellent mechanics pulling up off the dribble from long vantage points.

Not turning 19 until June, he is one of the youngest players currently projected to be drafted, according to basketball stats API.

The NBA draft is scheduled for June 25, but following worldwide suspension of basketball activities, NBA teams are lobbying the league office to push it to August in order to salvage the pre-draft process.

Lance Stephenson among Americans returning to Chinese basketball

With the Chinese Basketball Association preparing to end a nearly three-month hiatus, the league is welcoming back some of its foreign players, with perhaps the biggest splash of all coming from Jeremy Lin.

"Safely landed back in Beijing to finish out the CBA season!" Lin said on social media Thursday after spending 40 hours traveling from his Bay Area home to China.

"It's been an awesome 2 months camped out in the gym ... basketball has never been more meaningful," he added. "The world needs basketball now more than ever."

See the source image

Before he can reunite with his team, Lin -- like all foreign players returning to China -- will spend two weeks in quarantine.

"I am fully ready to work out in my room in the next 14 days, after which I will get back to the court with my teammates and finish this season with our best performance," he said.

Lin, the former NBA guard who enjoys great fanfare throughout China, is averaging 24.2 points, 5.8 rebounds and 5.8 assists per game for the Beijing Ducks, who are 19-11 and positioned to make a playoff push, according to professional basketball API provider iSports API.

iSports API covers a wide ranges of sports games with livescore, standings, events, line-ups, pre-match odds and players' statistics)

The CBA, which suspended play in late January, is expected to restart in mid-April. Once the league restarts, competition is expected to resume in limited capacity, as per iSports basketball API, including all 20 teams in one or two cities, a truncated regular-season and playoff schedule, and no fans.

Since the coronavirus outbreak hit China in January, sports have become a source of inspiration and power for the country's people. The recent victory of MMA fighter Zhang Weili at UFC 248 is a prime example of how sports can send an uplifting message to the nation's 1.4 billion people.

Lin, who has been sending well wishes to the Chinese people since the early stage of the outbreak, saw a generous welcome from Chinese fans, who have appreciated his voice and support as an American. On Chinese social media Weibo, where he has more than six million followers, Lin posted a photo of him autographing a Chinese medical worker's uniform at the airport. Soon after, it became one of the most popular posts on Chinese social platforms.

See the source image

Joining him in this category is Stephon Marbury, the former NBA star who won three titles for Beijing and is now living there. Marbury, the coach of Lin's rival team, Beikong, has been advocating for the public to follow medical guidelines, practice care and learn from China's lessons in fighting the virus.

Teams have been urging their foreign players to return so they can practice with full rosters. However, due to various complications, many are still waiting. As of now, among those who have returned to China are Lin, Ty Lawson, Donatas Motiejunas, Sonny Weems, Kyle Fogg, Pooh Jeter, Marko Todorovic, Antonio Blakeney and Ekpe Udoh. More are expected to return in coming days.

Hamed Haddadi -- a former NBA center and a veteran of the CBA -- is held up in his home country of Iran, where the pandemic has also hit hard. His team, Nanjing, is working with the Chinese embassy in Iran to aid in his return.

Lance Stephenson, who is in his first CBA stint with Liaoning, has indicated he will return.

"Ready," he posted on Weibo with a video highlight of himself from earlier in the season.

Jokic scores career-high 47 points with no TOs

Nikola Jokic wasn't keeping track of his points as the night wore on. He just knew he was scoring a lot.

Jokic scored a career-high 47 points, Will Barton added a season-best 28 and the Denver Nuggets held off the Atlanta Hawks 123-115 on Monday, as per iSports API.

The Nuggets, coming off a surprising loss at Washington two nights earlier, have won four of six to improve to 25-11, second-best in the Western Conference. Atlanta, worst in the NBA at 8-29, has dropped 11 of 13.

(Start free trial with your long-term reliable sports data partner, visit iSports API.)

See the source image

Trae Young finished with 29 points and Kevin Huerter had 22 for the Hawks.

Jokic's previous career high of 41 points was set Nov. 7, 2017, at home against Brooklyn. His previous season high, 31, came at home nine days ago against Memphis.

According to iSports API basketball data, Jokic is the third center with 45 points and no turnovers in a game, joining Shaquille O'Neal (Nov. 9, 1994 at Hornets) and Moses Malone (April 8, 1987 at Nets). Turnovers were first tracked in 1977-78.

Jokic surpassed his previous career high with a putback that gave Denver a 114-109 lead with 3:14 remaining. Jamal Murray followed with a turnaround jumper in the lane and Barton put back his own miss to put the Nuggets up 118-109 at the 1:57 mark.

That essentially ended all hopes for the Hawks, but it wasn't entirely easy for Denver. The Nuggets lost 125-121 to the Hawks at home in mid-November as Young had 42 points and 11 assists. Denver had dropped nine of 11 in Atlanta, recorded by iSports API.

After John Collins' dunk cut the lead to 91-88 just 22 seconds into the fourth quarter, Nuggets coach Michael Malone called a timeout. Monte Morrisfollowed with a runner and Michael Porter Jr. jammed in a putback to make it 95-88.

The Hawks cut the margin to one before Barton found Morris for an alley-oop and hit a 3-pointer to make it 106-100 with 6:54 remaining. Atlanta pulled within two on Young's 35-footer with 4:24 left, and Malone called another timeout. The move worked as the Hawks made just three field goals the rest of the way.

Huerter's second straight 3 cut the lead to two at the 6:07 mark of the third, and Malone called a timeout. Jokic quickly followed with a jumper, then stole the ball in the lane from Alex Len to set up Murray's two free throws.

Jerami Grant's three-point play made it 36-34 at the 9:37 mark of the second, and the Nuggets didn't trail again. About three minutes later, Grant rebounded a missed Hawks shot and drove for a layup that gave Denver its first double-digit lead.

Murray's layup in the final second put the Nuggets up by nine at halftime.

The team said in a statement that Isaac will be re-evaluated in eight-to-10 weeks.

The 6-foot-10 Florida State product was in the midst of a breakout season on the defensive end. He's the only player in the NBA this season averaging at least 2 blocks and 1.5 steals per game and held opponents to just 46.7 percent shooting in the paint, eighth-best among 43 players to defends at least 200 such shots, according to iSports API.

Knicks hire ex-Cavaliers coach David Blatt as consultant

The New York Knicks announced that they hired David Blatt as a basketball operations consultant.

"I look forward to the next step in my career as I officially retire from coaching," Blatt said, in part, in a statement released by the Knicks. "I've long been intrigued by working in a front office."

See the source image

Blatt was personal friends with Knicks president Steve Mills when the two were in college at Princeton. Blatt is also close with Craig Robinson, who is also working in the Knicks' front office. Blatt, Robinson and Mills all played on the basketball team at Princeton together, as per iSports basketball API.

"David Blatt is a great basketball mind and we look forward to adding him to the organization," Mills said in a statement.

Blatt was hired as the Cleveland Cavaliers coach in 2014 after an extensive search before the franchise knew that LeBron James would be leaving the Miami Heat to return to Cleveland.

After coaching the team to an NBA Finals berth in 2015, the Cavs were in first place in the Eastern Conference (30-11) the following season when Blatt was fired in January 2016. Tyronn Lue replaced Blatt as coach of the Cavaliers and that group went on to win the NBA championship, according to iSports API basketball API.

After leaving the NBA, Blatt went to Europe and coached in the Turkish Super League and then coached in the Greek Basket League. Blatt left his post as coach of Olympiakos in October, two months after announcing he had been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.

Blatt announced in August he had been diagnosed with MS, which attacks the central nervous system, a few months earlier.

Blatt was in attendance at Knicks practice on Wednesday.

Anthony Davis sits in Lakers' loss to Pacers with ankle sprain

Anthony Davis did not play in the Lakers' 105-102 loss to the Indiana Pacers on Tuesday night due to a mild ankle sprain.

It was the second game Davis has missed this season. He is leading the team in points (27.4), rebounds (9.3) and blocks (2.6) per game, as per iSports basketball API.

In Davis' absence, Jared Dudley made his first start of the season for the Lakers (24-4), who are now tied with the Milwaukee Bucks for the NBA's best record.

Davis tweaked the ankle during Sunday's win against the Atlanta Hawks. He grabbed at his right ankle when fouled on a layup in the closing minutes, but he was able to finish the game.

He had been listed as questionable on the injury report leading into Tuesday's game.

Davis previously has dealt with rib and shoulder soreness this season. Kyle Kuzma (ankle) was also out for Los Angeles, as previously announced.

Carmelo Anthony's contract with Blazers now fully guaranteed

The Portland Trail Blazers will amend Carmelo Anthony's contract so that it becomes fully guaranteed for the remainder of the season, accprding to league sources.

Portland had until early January to fully guarantee the deal for the season. Anthony, 35, had signed a non-guaranteed contract last month.

See the source image

Anthony was named the Western Conference Player of the Week last week after averaging 22.3 points, 7.7 rebounds and 2.7 assists to help the Blazers go 3-0,as per iSports API. It marked the first time he was named a player of the week since the 2014 season, while he was a member of the Knicks.

Head coach Terry Stotts told ESPN Radio's Spain and Company that Anthony's addition has been "a pleasure" for the team.

"Melo's been terrific for us," Stotts said. "He's enjoying the experience. He's been a breath of fresh air for us that we needed."

Stotts said he has been impressed with Anthony's conditioning after being out of action for a year.

"We put a kind of limit/restriction on the first game or two just because we didn't want to extend his minutes not knowing what shape he was in," Stotts told Spain and Company. "But now he's playing 32-35 minutes, he played 37 minutes the other night. And for him to be out of NBA basketball for a year and be able to come in and play productive minutes for 35 minutes in an NBA game, to me, was remarkable."

Anthony poured in 20 points in 36 minutes in Wednesday night's 127-116 win over the Sacramento Kings. He is averaging 16.9 points, 5.9 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game this season, according to iSports basketball API.
