After a thrilling penalty shootout victory
over 2004 silver medalists Paraguay, Egypt pushed hosts France to the limit in
the semi-finals.
Despite a late Jean-Philippe Mateta goal
forcing extra time in Lyon, Egypt ultimately fell 3-1. However, they now shift
their focus to securing a historic first Olympic medal under the guidance of
Brazilian coach Rogerio Micale, who led his country to gold in 2016.
"We delivered an outstanding
performance, containing France for 80 minutes, which I believe was
exceptional," Micale said, reflecting on Monday's narrow defeat. With
their sights set on the medal match, Egypt remains determined to make their
mark on the Olympic stage.
Egypt with win.
