Now boasting 11 goals from their last two games thanks to their previous 4-1 thrashing of Albania earlier this month, Poland have cemented their spot in second place. They have strung together a seven-game winning streak at home in World Cup qualification - scoring at least two goals in each of those encounters. They won their last two qualifiers: they put seven past San Marino in a 7-1 thrashing on Sunday night, before that, they had beat Albania 4-1 at home.

With 15 points taken from a possible 15 in World Cup qualifying, England have opened up a five-point gap at the top of the rankings. England made it five wins from five and back-to-back 4-0 victories against Andorra at the weekend. Prior of that game, they visited to Hungary’s place and won 0-4. England have amassed a 12-game unbeaten run away from home at this stage.

Claiming their first point of Qualifying, Azerbaijan come into this game on the back of a 1-1 draw versus the Republic of Ireland yesterday. Seemingly destined to exit Group A without a point, Azerbaijan travelled to the Aviva Stadium at the weekend to take on Ireland following three successive losses to Portugal, Serbia and Luxembourg in World Cup Qualifying. They can still only boast just one win from their last 13 games in all tournaments before they meet a Portugal side desperate to reclaim top spot in the group.

Portugal got a resounding 3-1 win as Qatar finished with nine men for their weekend friendly battle. Before that, Portugal were minutes away from suffering a humiliating defeat to Ireland, but Cristiano Ronaldo rose highest twice to head home and secured a 2-1 win for Portugal at the end. Now Portugal are in a highly unfamiliar second place with 10 points due to less goal difference than Serbia.

South Africa has obviously fallen out of the ranks of first-class teams in Africa in recent years. The last time the team participated in the world cup was in 2010. England have taken maximum points from their opening three games in qualification Group I. England managed a very important 2-1 home win over Poland (the main rivals for the top spot in Group I) after easing past the likes of San Marino and Albania in the opening two rounds. They then went on to enjoy a stunning summer featuring the European Championship final.
 
 

With a potentially hostile crowd in attendance, this could be a tricky game for England to fright. However, with many of England’s stars already showing good form this season, an away win seems the most likely result here.

UEFA -- Portugal vs Ireland

With a doomed Euro 2020 campaign now consigned to history, Portugal return to action on Wednesday to face the Republic of Ireland in a World Cup qualifier in Group A.

Portugal have taken seven points from three games to sit at the top of the group. Portugal suffered a quarter-final exit from the Euros when they fell to a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Belgium. Despite having to share the spoils in a 2-2 draw with Serbia, Portugal's victories over Azerbaijan and Luxembourg in Group A witnessed them rise to the summit after the opening round of qualifying fixtures. They are currently level with Serbia at the top of Group A and sit above them on goal difference.
 
 
 
 
Ireland
Following an underwhelming start to their qualifier campaign, Ireland find themselves fourth in Group A, only above rock-bottom Azerbaijan on goal difference. Ireland are yet to pick up a point so far after losing both of their opening fixtures against  Serbia and Luxembourg in March. They have also managed one win from their subsequent three friendly games, while playing out draws against Hungary and Qatar.
 
 
Prediction

Both sides have had contrasting runs in the qualifiers, with Portugal being the clearly superior side. Portugal have lost just five times in their last 50 games, which stretches back to 2017. It’s believed that they should have no problem to take down the visitor.
